Opportunities and Risks in India

Ms. Sonia Prashar
Managing Director of NürnbergMesse India (India)

In 2018, India jumped 65 positions from 142nd (2014) to 77th (2018) in 'World Bank's Ease of Doing Business Ranking’ 2018. The country has witnessed immense growth in the last decade spurred by a stable political environment, huge domestic market, strong youth base and investments from some of the leading international brands.

India’s middle class population is poised to expand significantly and could potentially add over 1 billion people to the global middle class between now and 2039. Two most prominent risks interconnected with this trend are – failure of urban planning and unemployment.

Initiatives such as ‘Make in India’, ‘Smart Cities’ and ‘Clean India’ have been created with the long term aim of inclusive prosperity, coming-of-age infrastructure and correcting India’s lopsided model of services-driven growth to an export oriented manufacturing hub.

The exhibition Industry in India is currently on a robust growth trajectory with the presence of more than 700 trade fairs organized by approximately 200 exhibition companies, in more than 18 economic macro segments. The various events attract more than 21.5 million visitors from all over the world. 40% of trade fairs are mounted on a national / international level & 60% of trade fairs are considered regional.

The Determined Future

Mr. Youngtae Cho
Professor of demography at Seoul National University (Korea)

The future is fixed? It doesn't seem very convincing. The fact that the future is already destined does not sound sweet, since the future will unfold regardless of my effort today.

But what if I have an eye to see the future which is already set? Here the future is the future of society, not my own. Then I can design and prepare my life to fit the best to the determined future. Surprisingly, from a demographic point of view, a large part of the future society is already determined. We can also predict the future in a very realistic way.

He will talk about how demography can show the picture of a determined future, what factors determine the future, and how to respond to the future. The lectures will provide useful information for individuals as well as businesses to prepare their mid- to long-term (5~10 years) plans for the future.
